Varius Family

Oscar Tusquets

You are invited to celebrate 25 years of the Varius chair designed by Oscar Tusquets with the presentation of the new Minivarius.

Designed by Oscar Tusquets in 1983 and produced for Bd Barcelona Design since 2003, Varius is the reference chair in the contemporary history of Spanish design. It’s been a success to both the public and its critics since it was born. It’s now twentyfive years old and celebrating the occasion in company of its family, * by friends and presenting the Minivarius into society. It’s not a children’s chair but a new version – lighter, more versatile, and more economic, made from plastic injection moulding, which is what is used today.

“Just when Varius was about to turn 25 years old the possibility of designing a more economical and versatile alternative suddenly occured to me, which would inherit a few of its virtues; above all ergonometry (which is what makes the Varius such a comfortable chair) and its characteristic backrest (which is a lot more attractive than the countless and disastrous imitations). A part from these few achievements that I didn’t want to forget about, I’ve been able to design a family of chairs that include: chairs without armrests, small armchairs, small rotating armchairs, high bar stools and benches. All four legged chairs are stackable in little space. The main body structure can be of wood or plastic. I must say that the help given by Bd’s current technical department, which is one of the best if not the best, has played a fundamental part in the realization of this ambitious project”, says Oscar Tusquets Blanca.
