Composición de lugar

Antoni Garau

19/05/94. (Sala 161)

From 19 May 1994 – 11 June

We constantly put order and disorder around us: we tidy the library, put the plates on the table, clean the teacups, construct buildings, open the rubbish bag, put colour to fabric, throw the rubbish bag away, we like the table here and the lamp there, the plants do not come into contact with the sun…The game of the artist is the conscious synthesis of our involuntary acts put evident, materialized and frozen in time for us to reflect on the action and decision.

What is a place but a physical space where we deposit our mental orders and disorders? The places are the result of our voluntary experiences and the fortuitous of important decisions, that seems to govern our lives and everyday accidents also. The composition of a place orders a small chaos and formulates a momentary response to abstract and long-lasting questions. It is the result of a volumetric trajectory by Antoni Garau that transforms the pigments in spatial scenarios of construction and deconstruction.

These works accumulate painted panels that are supported by their own inertia and located right on the limit point of their own weight, so that each element seems to occupy a place arbitrarily but in fact its position is the actual response to a given structure.

To Garau, inconsistency is the basis of his own plastic order, it is the great strength of his work: from doubt to shape, from chance to materialization.

An inverted wardrobe or a building, everything is the same image, so unreal, it rides on the back of a hybrid animal, half intuited, half invented.
