18/10/11. (Sala 277)

Milton Glaser’s label design presentation.

He has designed 4 wine and cava labels for Les 7 Portes restaurant to mark the 175th anniversary of its foundation and the series of original preparatory drawings.

Milton Glaser, internationally known for being the author of the I love N.Y. logo, which he designed in 1977, is a renowned figure in illustration and international design since the 1950’s. He has presented his work at MoMA in New York and the Pompidou Center in Paris and is still on the ball.

Educated at the Cooper Union in New York and at the the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna with Giorgio Morandi, he later founded Push Pin Studios with several classmates in 1954. He began a revolutionary creative movement which was consolidated in 1974 when he set up Milton Glaser, Inc. This led to multiple posters, album covers, logos, book covers, scripts, etc which are characterized by graphic language that inter relates pop aesthetics with classical paint, Japanese prints, early Italian and historical avant-garde, exerting a great influence on the visual culture of the last sixty years.

Milton Glaser has maintained a close relationship with Barcelona, a city that he has visited often because he has lectured at conferences, between 1987 and 1989 he redesigned the header and layout of La Vanguardia newspaper and in 1989 presented a major anthological exhibition at Salón del Tinell.

During one of his visits to Barcelona he discovered Les 7 Portes restaurant and became a regular customer and a friend as well. So, to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the restaurant he kindly offered to design the wine and cava labels to mark the commemoration and also presented the restaurant with all the preparatory drawings, now on display in this exhibition.

Thanks to Xano Armenter’s for his collaboration.
